Living in Moldova

Chișinău, the capital of Moldova, is a vibrant city with a population of approximately 700,000 people. It’s a modern European capital with a unique blend of Soviet-era architecture, 19th-century buildings, and contemporary developments.

As Moldova’s cultural and economic center, Chișinău offers numerous museums, theaters, and concert venues.

Notable fact: Chișinău is often called ‘the city of white stone’ due to the white limestone used in many of its historical buildings.

Transportation

Chișinău has an extensive public transportation network including buses, trolleybuses, and minibuses (marshrutkas). Public transportation is affordable, with a single ride costing 6 MDL (about 0.30 EUR). Taxis are also readily available and relatively inexpensive compared to Western European countries.

Living Conditions at Moldova State University (USM)

International students at USM are accommodated in several dormitories. The most commonly used are Dormitories 16, 10, 4, and 3, depending on availability.

Room Structure

Each dormitory is organized into sections. Rooms are designed for 2–3 students, with a shared bathroom and kitchen.

Cost of Accommodation

The monthly fee is approximately 60 EUR/month for international students. Payment can be made semester-by-semester or monthly.

Dormitory Categories

Category I (Dormitories 10, 11, 12, 13): Highest comfort — private bathroom, toilet and kitchen per section. Wi-Fi, laundry, relaxation areas.
Category II (Dormitory 16): Shared bathroom per section, shared kitchen per floor. Wi-Fi, study rooms.
Category III (Dormitories 1, 2, 3, 4, 19): Basic facilities — shared bathrooms, toilets and kitchens per floor.

Rules and Community

Music is not allowed after 11:00 PM. Visitors must present identification. The university offers orientation programs and ongoing support for international students.
